Summary
On
20th August 2025, I B.Sc Microbiology students had the opportunity to visit Institute
of Veterinary Preventive Medicine (IVPM), Ranipet as an industrial visit. It provided
us with valuable practical exposure to various aspects of veterinary science.
The visit helped us understand the importance of preventive medicine in
maintaining animal health and supporting livestock productivity.
During
the visit, we learned about the production of bacterial and viral vaccines,
diagnostic methods for detecting animal diseases, and the quality control
measures followed to ensure the safety and effectiveness of vaccines. We also
observed the disease surveillance and monitoring systems implemented for the
control of major livestock diseases.
The
staff members were very informative and explained each process clearly, from
vaccine preparation to storage and distribution. The visit enhanced our
knowledge of biosecurity practices, laboratory procedures, and the role of IVPM
in national animal disease control programmes.
We
also visited the diagnostic and quality control laboratories, where we learned
about serological and microbiological testing techniques such as ELISA, agar
gel immunodiffusion, and virus isolation methods. The demonstration of vaccine
potency, purity, and sterility testing gave us a clear idea of how stringent
quality assurance measures are followed in vaccine production.
Another
important aspect of the visit was understanding the institute’s contribution to
disease surveillance and epidemiology, including sero-monitoring and reporting
under the National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP). We gained insight
into how data collection, laboratory diagnosis, and vaccine distribution are
coordinated to prevent and control major livestock diseases.
Overall,
the industrial visit was highly informative and inspiring. We gained knowledge
about how various bacterial and viral vaccine are produced, tested, and
supplied to safeguard livestock health across Tamil Nadu.
